South Sudan gained its independence in July 2011 when it was recognised as a country in its own right. We can now offer a trio of higher value notes from this troubled African nation. Included are the 100, 500 and 1000 South Sudanese Pound notes dated between 2019 and 2021 (P15-PW17). The fronts feature a portrait of Dr Johan Garanga de Mabior. He was instrumental in the foundation of South Sudan and led the Sudan People’s Liberation Army during the 2nd Sudanese Civil War. He was tragically killed in a helicopter crash in 2005, robbed of the chance to see his country finally achieve independence. The back of 100 pounds features a lion and a huge waterfall, the 500 pounds a view of the Juba Nila Bridge over the White Nile River while a pair of ostriches is featured on the 1000. Uncirculated.
The country known as South Vietnam existed between 1955 and 1975. These dates coincide almost exactly with the Vietnam War, the end of which brought the reunification of North and South Vietnam and the establishment of the country we know today as Vietnam. The two notes on offer now date from the early years of South Vietnam. The 1 dong appeared in 1956(P1) and the 5 dong in 1955(P2) Both are in Crisp Uncirculated condition. The 1 dong has an illustration of a temple on the front with a park and temple on the back. The green 5 dong features a mythical dragon on the front and a farmer in a paddy field with water oxen and plough.
