As civil war raged in China in the 1940’s, Xinjiang experienced a brief period of independence and became known as East Turkestan. On 1 October 1949, Chinese Communist Party leader Mao Zedong declared the creation of the People’s Republic of China and brought Xinjiang under its control. On 31 December 1954 and 1 January 1955 there was an ethnic-Uighur uprising and Communist troops and their families were sent to the region. Following the suppression, The Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region (XUAR) was established by the PRC government on October 1, 1955. In 1985, to celebrate the 30th anniversary, the government issued this medal to those military members and their families. These are now quite scarce and sought after. The medal is a 13-point gilt star measuring 45mm across with red and white enamel depicting a power station with snow-capped mountains in the background and animals grazing in the foreground and a golden star in the sky above. A bar with the dates 1955-1985 is attached above. The reverse carries bilingual script in Chinese characters and the local Uighur language which is a kind of Arabic script. The medals come as issued in a presentation case which has its own stand on the back for upright display.

We were only allowed to get a very limited number of these five piece Albert Einstein collections. Because that was all they had left. Each crownsized medal shows a different portrait of the scientist Einstein on one side, the other side has his engraved portrait and his most famous quote ‘E=MC2’. This set of five Proof medallions comes in a handsome presentation case. Great for yourself or someone into science. Unfortunately now we now have just 16 collections available but good news they are still at our normal price of just £19.50. Remember that is less than £4.00 a crownsized medallion, great value but a small supply available. You couldn’t have them made at this price and we saw just one of the medallions online for £8. Please do remember, just 16 sets available.

Issued in 2005 for the 25th World Food Day on the 16th of October, this handsome very high relief art medal was issued by the United Nations in Rome. It was issued by the FAO or Food For All Organization. It has some wheat growing out of an open book and the other side has a globe with a cartouche. One of the highest relief medallions that I have seen and making it must have been quite difficult. They are Uncirculated and struck in bronze with a light golden finish.
Born Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz on 13 August 1926, the son of a wealthy Spanish farmer, Fidel Castro went on to study law at the University of Havana where he adopted leftist and anti-imperialist ideas. He participated in various rebellions and was imprisoned for a failed attempt to overthrow the Cuban president Batista in 1953. After a year’s imprisonment, Castro travelled to Mexico where he formed a revolutionary group, the 26th of July Movement, with his brother Raúl Castro and Ernesto “Che” Guevara and went on to play a key role in the Cuban Revolution which saw the overthrow of Batista in 1959 and Castro assuming military and political power as Cuba’s prime minister. He died on 25 November 2016, having been the longest serving non-royal head of state in the entire 20th and 21st centuries. He is pictured on this commemorative medal at different stages of his life, mostly smoking a Cuban cigar!

On 28 October 1944, Ukraine celebrated its liberation from Nazi Germany when the last territory was cleared of German troops. The date became a national holiday in Ukraine when those who died in the conflict are remembered and veterans honoured. 2004 marked the 60th Anniversary and these medals were issued to veterans, each coming with a presentation certificate with the recipient’s name. These medals are highly emotive, particularly at the present time.
