The use of the Roman goddess of the harvest Ceres as a representation of the French Republic began during the short-lived Second Republic of 1849-1850, and it was reintroduced in 1871 after the fall of Napoleon III. These bronze 5 and 10 centime coins were introduced in 1871 and circulated until 1897 when Ceres was replaced by Marianne, the more recognised symbol of all French Republics.

This French Silver coin depicting the portrait of a woman sowing on a farm is based on a painting by Millet. They were issued from the late 1890s until about 1919. It is about the size of the British Sixpence. But their price is much less than you would have to pay for similar British coins in similar condition. Dates will be of our choice, but most are toward the end of the date run, but all coins are in Uncirculated condition with nice light toning. Worth adding to your collection, especially at this price.
Although the French Revolution began in 1789, Louis XVI remained on the throne as a constitutional monarch until September 1792, and not as the absolute ruler he had been before. The old “livre tournois” remained the currency until it was replaced by the franc in 1795, so these 2 sol coins were the last of his reign. Struck only between 1791 and 1793, they show the image of the king with his new title of “King of the French”. The obverse shows a Liberty Cap on a fasces against a background of an oak wreath. These coins are very well worn and are only being offered in Fair condition, but they are definitely of great historical interest. FFR9953 Lous XV.

Between 1960 and 1970 the French Mint issued silver crowns which were reminiscent of the silver crowns of the 1800’s. You have three figures on the obverse, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. The reverse has the value 10 Francs in a wreath with the date. These are full crownsized and in uncirculated condition, they have a little of the nice toning, after all they are at least 50 years old. Supplies are limited and it is the last crown ever issued by France.
From the late 1800s until about 1920 the French issued a beautiful set of coins 1/2 Franc to the 2 Francs. It had a woman sowing grain and we guess was based on the paintings of Millet. We've managed to put together date sets of the three silver denominations, Half Franc, One Franc, and Two Francs. This set is dated 1916. All sets contain matching dates and the coins are in Extremely Fine or better condition. They are still toned, as we have not touched them. But we do believe these are some of the most attractive coins that France has issued in modern times. Supplies are extremely limited and we think they are beautiful.

When France reformed its coinage in 1960 following the introduction of the new franc, it was decided that the new 5 franc coin would be struck in silver, and this lasted until 1969. Only the 10 francs continued to be struck in silver until 1974, after which all coins were issued in base metals. The obverse shows La Semeuse (Sower) designed by Louis Oscar Roty and which became a national symbol of France that has featured on many coins since 1900. On the reverse there are intermingled sprigs of wheat, acorns and olive branches.
These crownsized medallions honour the French artist Henri Matisse. They carry a nominal value of ‘20 Euros’ and come in both cupro-nickel and goldine metals. They are in Prooflike condition and we thought we sold out years ago. Steve and Peter have been going through some safes we have not opened in years and they came across them. We have seen them being sold on The Continent for some silly prices.
