These purple 5 rand notes were issued between 1988 and 1994 (P119e). Like all South African notes at the time, they feature the portrait of Jan van Riebeeck on the front. He was responsible for establishing the Cape Colony in the 17th century. On the back, a minehead is illustrated, a nod to the important sector in the South African economy. Crisp Uncirculated
