George VI, Shilling (English) Silver High Grade

We have just bought a nice group of high grade King George VI Silver Shillings. These are the last Silver Shillings ever to be made for circulation. They were made between 1937 and 1946 and there are two reverses, one for England (presented here) and one for Scotland. The coins are in Extremely Fine or better condition, but as we bought them as a lot, we are going to sell them unchecked. Dates will be as they come out of the bag, but the quality will always be high and they are the last type of Shilling ever to be made in silver for general usage.

The cupro-nickel coinage was first made in 1947 and this type was only made for two years 1947 and 1948. We have the King George VI 1948 Shillings issued with the Scottish reverse in About Uncirculated. Both are difficult to find, as this is an anniversary year, they were struck 70 years ago. A two year only type coin with the Scottish reverse and in high grade, how much more could you ask for?

George VI, Shilling (Scottish) 1949 Gem Unc

It was during the reign of King George VI that all silver was removed from our coinage and replaced with what we use today, cupronickel. But what many collectors do not realise is that the cupronickel coins of George VI in choice condition are much harder to get than choice silver coins of George VI. We recently purchased a group of the 1949 Scottish Shillings, put away in 1949 and they are super! We've have classed them Choice Uncirculated and Gem Uncirculated, presented here is the coin graded in Gem Unc. The worst coin is far superior to what you see on the market and the finest coins are just about as good as you will ever see. A chance to buy a Choice George VI 1949 Scottish cupronickel Shilling at a price that will please you…

Victoria, Shilling (Jubilee Head) 1887 Very Fine

In 1887, Queen Victoria celebrated her Golden Jubilee, and the Royal Mint was allowed to change her portrait for the first time since 1838. Unfortunately, Queen Victoria hated her new portrait on the Shilling... Coincraft has a nice group of the first year of issue, 1887. The coins are struck in Sterling Silver and are in Very Fine Condition. Considering they are now 130 years old, this is quite outstanding.

Victoria, Shilling (Jubilee Head) 1887 Extremely Fine

We have bought a nice group of the 1887 Queen Victoria Jubilee Head Sterling Silver Shillings in Extremely Fine condition, a very high grade. 1887 is the first year of issue of this short-lived type. In fact, Queen Victoria did not like her portrait on this coin, this design was only issued for two years 1887 and 1888. All of the coins on offer are struck in 1887 in Sterling Silver. You have Queen Victoria on one side with a very small crown on her head. This is what she didn’t like because she felt that it made her look silly. On the reverse, you have a crowned set of arms within a Garter. The coins are Extremely Fine.

1887 Shilling Extremely Fine_obv

Victoria, Shilling (Jubilee Head) 1887 Extremely Fine

Queen Victoria came to the throne in 1837 and in 1838 they issued her first coinage. Because she was so young when she became Queen, this new coinage became known as Young Head Coins. In 1887 when she celebrated her Gold Jubilee, she finally allowed her portrait to be changed on the coins, this new portrait became known as the Jubilee Head Coinage. It only lasted from 1887 until 1892 when it was again changed. We have spent years accumulating enough 1887 Jubilee Head coins in high grades to offer them to you. All are struck in Sterling Silver and all are dated 1887 the first year of this new coinage. For years collectors have assumed that these coins are common. But in fact in the higher grades these coins have become very difficult to find. Prices while they have risen are still very affordable, especially when you think that they are 131 years old. On offer here is a Victoria 1887 shilling in extremely fine grade.

Victoria, Shilling (Jubilee Head) 1887 Fine

In 1887 Queen Victoria celebrated her Golden Jubilee and for the first time in 50 years she allowed her portrait on the coinage to be changed. She hated the portrait on the Shilling so it was only made in 1887 and a few in 1888. We offer nice Fine examples of the Sterling Silver 1887 for your collection. Everyone thinks it is common but this design was only struck for two years and is an important type coin.

Victoria, Shilling (Large Jubilee Head)

There were two designs of Queen Victoria Jubilee Head shillings, neither of which Queen Victoria liked. The first was only issued in 1887 & 1888 and has a very small crown on her head, which made her look very big. The second type and the one we are offering you this issue is the Large Head Queen Victoria Jubilee Shilling. Issued from 1889-1892 the Mint enlarged her head to fill the whole side of the shilling, this gave a more pleasing portrait of the Queen. All the coins are struck in Sterling Silver and here we offer the Shilling Fine. Dates are of our choice but the more you order the more different dates we will try and give you.
