Royal Mint Coins

Royal Mint Coins are very popular with coin collectors from around the world. Over the years the Royal Mint has produced a significant number of commemorative coins, medals, and bullion, as well as all of the UK’s circulating coinage. As one of the UK’s biggest and oldest coin dealers, we sell Royal Mint coins to collectors and not investors. That is why you won’t find on this page all the Royal Mint commemorative coins released throughout the years. That is because, in our opinion, and from a collector’s perspective, some of the items produced by the Royal Mint are just not worth collecting… Richard, our founder, has given an extensive interview for coin update on how national mints often let coin collectors down. You can view this article and many others on our News page.

Here you’ll find some of the most popular items the Royal Mint has released, which we think are worth collecting, sold at fair prices. Such as the Britannia Coins, the Royal Mint Gold SovereignRoyal Mint Proof Coin Sets, and some of the Royal Mint 50ps. These are not the only items worth collecting, but they tend to be very popular with collectors. Scroll down to see more items we think will be worth your time and money.

Elizabeth II, £1 (English Pound) 1987 Silver Proof Piedfort - in capsule

In 1984 the Royal Mint started its first series of Silver Proof Pounds, they were for Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and finally England. This 1987 issue was the last of the series and was for England. These are the normal coins that are used in circulation, but special collectors editions which the Royal Mint struck in Proof Sterling Silver and an even smaller number in double thick Sterling Silver, which they call Piedfort. Many collectors believe that they should start at the beginning of a series and then work toward today’s coins. The coins we offer are the Piedforts. Each coin comes in the protective capsule as issued by the Mint. Sterling Silver is 925 parts Silver per 1,000 parts total and is the Silver that our coins used to be made of. Remember these are double the normal thickness. Add this beautiful Sterling Silver Piedfort Proof Pound to your collection, it’s a nice place to start…

Elizabeth II, £1 (Northern Ireland Pound) 1996 Proof Sterling Silver - in capsule

The 1996 Silver Proof Pound is now 22 years old it would make an excellent gift for someone born or married in 1996. It has the Northern Ireland design on it which is the Celtic Cross and should appeal to anyone who has Celtic blood in them. Each coin comes in a protective capsule inside the case of issue as issued by the Mint. The obverse has the Maklouf bust of Queen Elizabeth II and this is the penultimate issue with this bust. We think they are handsome and our price on this Sterling Silver Proof 1996 Silver Proof Pound is £39.50.

Elizabeth II, £1 (Scottish Pound) 1984 Silver Proof Piedfort - In Royal Mint case

In 1983 the Royal Mint issued its first-ever non-Gold pound coin, in 1984 they issued its second-ever non-Gold pound. It is this second coin that we are now offering to you. It was the start of a series of four coins and the coins on offer are the Special Collectors Edition struck in Piedfort Proof Sterling Silver. Each coin comes in a protective capsule with a Royal Mint case. These beautiful Proof Silver versions of the pound in your pocket quickly sold out. Even our supply is very limited.

1994_Scottish_Pound_Rev

Elizabeth II, £1 (Scottish Pound) 1994 Proof Sterling Silver FDC - in capsule

This handsome Sterling Silver proof version of the Pound coin was issued in 1994 when the design was to honour Scotland. You have a rampant Lion on one side with the so-called Maklouf bust of the Queen on the other side. These are Special Collector’s Editions struck in Proof Sterling Silver by the Royal Mint. They had an original mintage limit of 25,000, but I don’t know how many they actually struck. Each Sterling Silver Proof comes in a protective capsule inside the original Royal Mint case of issue. The design is most attractive and it would be very difficult today to even get a normal circulation issue in Uncirculated let alone Silver Proof. Now some 26 years old and not an easy coin to find, a great gift if you know someone born or married in 1994 and with the new Pound Coin just released, interest and demand for these older issues is greater.

2009 £1 (Specimen Pound) Prooflike Unc_obv

Elizabeth II, £1 (Specimen Pound) 2009 Prooflike Unc

The Pound coins toward the end of the series have always been difficult to find in Uncirculated condition. No one put them away as no one realized they were going to change the composition and design of the Pound. Not only did we have managed to obtain the difficult 2009 Pound, but the coins we have are also from the Mint Set and thus in Specimen BU condition. The Mint issues three grades of coins, Uncirculated that you get in your change with all the bag marks that entails. Specimen Briliant Uncirculated, were in bubble packs, Uncirculated but with beautiful Prooflike surfaces. Then there is Proof which requires the coin to have multiple strikes to get the almost perfect surface. These 2009 Pounds we are offering are in Specimen Brilliant Uncirculated condition.

2000 £1 Welsh Pound Proof Sterling Silver_obv

Elizabeth II, £1 (Welsh Pound) 2000 Proof Sterling Silver

In the year 2000 we saw something that most people will never see, not the change from one Century to another Century, but the change over from one Millennium to another Millennium. From dates that started 19—to ones that started 20—. The Royal Mint as usual issued a Sterling Silver version of the Pound coins for VIP collectors. It had a beautiful rendition of the Welsh Dragon and is one of the most beautiful of the Pound designs. Of course this size and composition of the Pound coin has already changed...

£5_King_Canute_2017_Sterling _Silver_Proof

Elizabeth II, £5 (King Canute) 2017 Sterling Silver Proof

In 2017 the Royal Mint issued a special commemorative Sterling Silver Proof £5 to honour King Canute. King Canute, also known as Cnut was born in Denmark in 985 and won the throne of England in 1016. Scotland submitted to him in 1017. His later accession to the Danish throne in 1018 brought the crowns of England and Denmark together. He is perhaps best known for the rising of the tide story. He was the King who sat by the water, raised his hand and commanded the tide to stop. He did this to show his sycophantic courtiers how empty and worthless the power of a King is when compared to the power of God who commands heaven, earth, and sea. We believe The Royal Mint issued this £5 in Proof Sterling Silver coin with a beautiful, yet modern design, for £82.50 at the time. They no longer have it for sale on their website, so they probably have sold out. We have them in the complete package as issued by The Royal Mint, outer package, inner package, certificate, etc.

Elizabeth II_£5_Queen_Mother_90th_Birthday_1990_obv

Elizabeth II, £5 (Queen Mother 90th Birthday) 1990

In 1990 the late Queen Mother celebrated her 90th birthday and the Royal Mint issued a special commemorative £5 piece to honour that event. They also issued a specimen example in an early type of bubble pack, not as fancy as the modern packaging, not as expensive as the modern ones either. You have a crowned cipher on the reverse with the dates 1900-1990 and H. M. the Queen on the obverse. These are still mint sealed, in a smaller package which is easier to store. We found 25 of them in one of the vault rooms and while they last, you can have one for a great price!

2000_£5_Queen_Mother_Silver_Piedfort

Elizabeth II, £5 (Queen Mother) 2000 Silver Piedfort

In 2000 the Royal Mint issued a commemorative £5 to honour the Queen Mother’s 100th birthday. It is a most unusual coin as you have a Queen on both sides. The obverse has Queen Elizabeth II and the reverse her mother Queen Elizabeth. It is very unusual and a fitting tribute to the Queen Mother, who, unfortunately, died just 2 years later. The coins on offer are the Sterling Silver Piedfort coins. That means they are twice as thick as the normal silver proofs. The mintage is just 14,850 coins all in choice Proof condition. Today the Mint charges £167.50 for a Piedfort £5 piece. We made a great buy and we are giving you the chance to share in that fantastic purchase. We're not selling them for £167.50, or even £120.00, we're selling them for JUST £99.50 while supply lasts. Yes, you can own a Sterling Silver Piedfort £5 piece for £68.00 less than the Mint is charging today!

Picture of Elizabeth II, £5 (Queen Mother’s 90th birthday) 1990 Sterling Silver Proof

Elizabeth II, £5 (Queen Mother’s 90th birthday) 1990 Sterling Silver Proof

The first £5.00 crownsized coin was struck in 1990 and it honoured the late Queen Mother on her 90th birthday, 1900-1990. You have her daughter, Queen Elizabeth II, on the obverse and the entwined letter E & E for the two Elizabeth's on the reverse. Because this was the first crownsized silver $5 coin ever issued, it is especially important. We have gleaming Sterling Silver Proof examples to offer you for your collection. The late Queen Mother was held in very high esteem because of her wartime efforts and also for the support she gave to both her husband and to her daughter. Today the Royal Mint charges between £80-£88 for a silver £5 coin, we think that our price on this first-ever £5 coin is much more interesting.
