Continuing on with Queen Victoria, we also have the 1887 Florin Uncirculated. These Jubilee Head Florins are from the first year of issue, 1887, in uncirculated condition. These coins are 137 years old and in Uncirculated, never used condition. Supplies are limited and you can own a Jubilee Head Florin from the first year of issue.

Furthermore, we have a very interesting addition this month, the Japan 2 Shu 'Tenpo Nishukin'. These are small coins or bars that were minted by local magnates, but were exchangeable from region to region. They are .298 gold. They were known as 'ryō', and it was a gold currency unit in Japan for some 300 years until the reforms of the Emperor Meiji brought in the yen in 1871.

In addition to these exciting new coins, we also invite you to explore our wide range of collectables, including British, world, medieval, hammered, and ancient coins, books, as well as stamps.

Victoria Bun Head Penny, Halfpenny & Farthing Set

Victoria Bun Head Penny, Halfpenny & Farthing Set

Queen Victoria came to the throne in 1837 at the age of 18 and reigned for 63 years and 216 days, the second longest reign of any British monarch. Her first coins came into circulation in 1838 and carried a youthful portrait, known as the Young Head which was used until 1860 when a new design was introduced, known as the ‘Bun Head’ Coinage. At the same time they stopped striking coins in copper and introduced a Farthing, Halfpenny and Penny in Bronze with this new portrait. We offer here type sets of these bronze ‘Bun Head’ coins struck between 1860-1895. You get one of each denomination, Farthing, Halfpenny and Penny supplied in VG-Fine condition. Victoria Young Head Half Crown Fine_obv

Victoria Young Head Half Crown Fine

We have on offer Halfcrowns from Victoria’s reign bearing her Young Head portrait. The Royal Mint ceased striking these wonderful pieces for circulation in 1850 when focus turned to striking florins as an introduction to decimalisation. That attempt at decimalisation failed, and in February 1874, Prime Minister Gladstone gave instructions for the minting of halfcrowns to be resumed. Florins and halfcrowns continued to co-exist until decimalisation in the late 1960s.

Victoria Young Head Maundy Set GEF_main

Victoria Young Head Maundy Set GEF

During the long reign of Queen Victoria there were three types of Maundy Sets issued: Young Head, Jubilee Head and Old Head. The Young Head is the first and tends to be the most difficult to get, especially in the higher grades. Remember a real Maundy Set contains 4 coins the 1d, 2d, 3d and 4d all of the same dates. Some people try to pass off mixed date sets as Maundy Sets, but that is not true. Real Maundy sets must contain all the coins of the same date. The Young Head Victorian Maundy Sets on offer have all four coins of the same date and the coins are in Good Extremely Fine condition, which is a very high grade to find early silver in. Dates of our choice, but if you order more than one set we will give you different dates. PLEASE NOTE: PHOTOGRAPHY IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE COIN

Victoria, Jubilee Head Halfcrown, 1887 Fine_obv

Victoria, Jubilee Head Halfcrown, 1887 Fine

It was said Victoria didn’t celebrate her Silver Jubilee in 1862 out of sorrow for Prince Albert who died 6 months earlier. For her Golden Jubilee however, on the 20th June 1887, 50 years on from her Coronation as a 17 year old, London was full of excitement. The Queen participated in a procession to Westminster Abbey in an open carriage, spectators sat on terraced benches along the 10 mile route. To celebrate, the Royal Mint commissioned J. Edgar Boehm to design the Queen’s “Jubilee” portrait, a design which was more in keeping with her age than the “Young Head” which was adopted for the previous 50 years. We have on offer these Halfcrowns featuring the Jubilee bust of Victoria, a design that was only in use for 6 years.
