Victoria Imperf Penny red on Cover_main

Victoria Imperf Penny red on Cover

These are fantastic items, original envelopes mailed in the 1840’s & 1850’s with the early imperforate (no perforations around the edge) Penny Red stamp. Many of the early issues were actually printed using the same plates used to print the Penny Black stamps. What is also fascinating about these early covers is the almost complete lack of an address! Most of the envelopes have only a name and a town on them so these people must have been well-known at the time. They also often carry additional handstamps showing which post offices handled them on route to their destinations. Fascinating pieces of social and postal history. Limited availability.

Victoria, Halfpenny, 1858, Fine_obv

Victoria, Halfpenny, 1858, Fine

These are the last copper halfpennies ever struck and Victoria’s ‘Young head’ series is an ever-popular one with collectors. The obverse depicts her youthful portrait by Wyon with date below, the reverse has Britannia seated. They were struck between 1838 and 1860, in theory - in 1840, 1842, 1849 and 1850 they weren’t struck at all. 1839 was only made in Proof, 1845 is Very Rare and 1860 Extremely Rare. So, realistically 1848 is the only date unrepresented in our offering below. Make the most of the opportunity as it’s the first time we’ve offered these halfpennies by date and who knows when we will be able to offer them again.
