Edward III Penny Fine_obv

Edward III Penny Fine

Edward III was King of England from January 1327 until his death in 1377. He is noted for his military success – notably over the French during The Hundred Years’ War, and for restoring royal authority after the disastrous reign of his father, Edward II. Edward III transformed England into one of the most formidable military powers in Europe. His fifty-year reign was one of the longest in English history, and saw vital developments, in particular the evolution of the English Parliament, as well as the ravages of the Black Death. He outlived his eldest son, Edward the Black Prince, and the throne passed to his grandson Richard II. We’ve been putting Edward III Pennies aside, it’s taken many years to accumulate enough to offer you, in either heavily circulated VG or in Fine with more details visible. Each hammered coin is individually struck by hand, therefore no two coins are the same. The photos are representative of what you will receive, but numbers are very limited and it may take us years to be able to offer these as a feature again.

Edward IV Penny, Durham Under Bishop Booth, Fair_obv

Edward IV Penny, Durham Under Bishop Booth, Fair

Edward IV ascended the throne at age 18 and was King of England from 1461 to 1483, except for 7 months in 1470-71 when he temporarily lost the throne to Henry VI during the Wars of the Roses. You may know Edward IV was the grandfather of Henry VIII, after his eldest daughter, Elizabeth married Henry VII. However, you may not know that Edward IV is the 15th Great Grandfather to our current King Charles III! Edward IV struck coins at the Tower Mint in London, but he also gave rights to Archbishops to produce coins at mints right across the country – from Durham to Canterbury to Bristol and others in between. The coins we offer are Edward IV Pennies struck at Durham, struck under Bishop Lawrence Booth (1465-1470). Pennies of this period are notoriously difficult to find in decent grade, they were manufactured on small, irregular flans or from crude local dies.

Hungary, Bela III Silver Denar

Hungary, Béla II Silver Denar

Béla was the only son of Duke Álmos, the younger brother of King Coloman of Hungary. Álmos devised several plots to dethrone his brother and in retaliation, according to one version of events, Coloman deprived Álmos of his duchy and also gave orders that the infant Béla should be castrated but the man who was instructed to blind them feared God and the sterility of the royal line, and therefore he castrated a dog and brought its testicles to the King! Álmos died in exile in 1127 and Coloman’s only son Stephen died in 1131 leaving Béla as the legitimate heir to the throne. Béla’s blindness prevented him from administering his kingdom without assistance and he appears to have regarded his wife Helena as co-ruler assisted by her brother Beloš. Béla’s reign was short at only 10 years, these silver denars were one of the few coins issued during his reign. They have a large cross on one side with crescents and pellets in the angles and a small cross within two circles on the reverse.

Medieval Long Cross Cut Farthing_obv

Medieval Long Cross Cut Farthing

Between 1180 and 1247 the Short Cross, and later the “Long Cross” pennies dominated everyday trading. Due to the lack of small change, the mint would cut these pennies into halves and quarters to be used as halfpennies and farthings. These cut coins were used during the reigns of Henry II, Richard “The Lionheart”, John “Lackland” and his son Henry III until Edward I’s new coinage of 1279. The Mints, Moneyers and even the King can be difficult to tell, but we’ll identify as much as possible. Here we have on offer a group of the cut-farthings from the long cross version (1247-1279).
