ETHIOPIA CENT / Santeem 1944 BU

This small brass coin in Brilliant Uncirculated condition was issued in Ethiopia during the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie and bears his image on one side and the Lion of Judah on the other. It is dated 1936 in the Ethiopian Ge’ez calendar, which is 1944 in the Gregorian calendar. Despite this, not all were minted that year as there were subsequent issues in 1967 and 1973, but with the same date. Haile Selassie himself was deposed in 1974 and is believed to have been murdered in prison the following year. In the Rastafari movement, he is regarded the returned messiah of the Bible.

Almohamad Square Dirhem Fine

These curiously shaped square silver dirhams were struck by the Almohad Caliphate, founded by Ibn Tumart, a member of the Masmuda, a Berber tribe that controlled much of Northern Africa and Spain at the time. They were struck between 1121-1269 AD making them around 800-900 years old and have Arabic script on both sides showing mint marks and declarations of faith but are undated and anonymous, meaning that they are not attributable to any single ruler. The square shape was probably symbolic and linked to the emergence of the Square Kufi c script that emerged in the 12th century, influenced by Iranian architecture. They certainly weren’t the first to strike square coins as the Indo-Greeks had done this over 1000 years before but since these dirhams are also quite thin, one practical reason for their shape would be to make it easier to cut them from a larger flat piece of metal.

United States of America, Barber Dime

Charles Barber was the Chief Engraver at the Philadelphia Mint in the United States. But he was also British and most collectors don’t know that. He designed many coins from the Dime (10c) to the Half Dollar. His coins circulated from 1892 to 1916, when the designs were replaced with others. We have always found that the smallest denomination, the Dime or 10 Cents is difficult to get hold of. The coins have the bust of Liberty on one side and the denomination on the other side. They are struck in 900 fine Silver and the coins on offer are in Very Good condition, especially considering that they are over 100 years old. If you have bought the other denominations, you will certainly want to add this denomination to your collection, but supplies are limited.
