Slovenia gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 and immediately issued new banknotes. From this first series, dated 1992, we are delighted to offer a set of 8 Specimen notes with values from the 1 to the 1000 tolarjev (P1-6s P8s-9s) Slovenia, of course, is now part of the Eurozone and since 2007, no longer issues currency in its own name. These turned up when we moved offices recently having been tucked in the back of a safe for the last 5 years!. So, as a special and to celebrate us finding them, we are offering this 8 note 1992 Slovenia Specimen Set in Crisp Uncirculated condition.
These blue 100 peseta notes dated 1925 were printed in England by the security printers Bradbury Wilkinson. They are beautifully engraved with the portrait of Philip II on the front and a view of the Escorial, the resting place of the Kings of Spain, at the centre. On the back is a detail of a painting of La Silla de Felipe II a craggy vantage point from where Philip II is supposed to have watched the construction of The Escorial. (P69)Although these notes are dated in the 1920s they were actually released into circulation during the Republic of the 1930s. Available in Fine and Good VF condition.
We offer examples of the 25 pesetas dated 1928 issued by Spain.(P74b) Engraved and printed at Bradbury Wilkinson in New Malden Surrey, the front is dominated by a portrait of 17th-century poet and dramatist Calderon de la Barca alongside a view of his monument in Plaza de Santa Anna in Madrid. The back shows a detail of a painting by Domingo Munoz of The Devotion of the Cross. We can offer this impressive note in Fine and GVF.
Spanish Golden Age painter Velazquez graces the front of this 50 pesetas note dated 1928 (P75). He is shown next to the Prado Museum in Madrid while the back shows his 1635 work ‘The Surrender of Breda’. It documents the moment Dutch forces ceded their town to Spain. Printed in England by Bradbury & Wilkinson, this is a densely engraved old note. Lovely in either Fine or VF-GVF.
The celebrated 17th-century painter Velazquez is the portrait on the front of these 50 pesetas dated 1928 (P75b) He was the leading painter in the court of the Spanish King Philip IV. The back of the note depicts one of Velazquez’s paintings. Known as Las Lanzas or the Surrender of Breda, it shows the Dutch General Nassau handing the keys of the city of Breda to the Spanish General Spinola. A veritable little work of art Crisp EF/ GEF.
High grade examples of the 50 pesetas issued in 1935 by Spain. (P88) Engraved and printed by Thomas de la Rue the front features the portrait of Santiago Ramos y Cajal. He was famous as a doctor and histologist who won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1906. His elaborate memorial, found in the Parque del Buen Retiro in Madrid is illustrated on the back. These are lovely examples in Crisp EF/GEF at just £14.50.
Two different 5 kroner notes issued by Sweden between 1947 and 1981. The first dated between 1947 and 1952 has an illustration on the front of Svea seated with lion and shield. A portrait of King Gustav appears on the back (P33) Available in Crisp GVF-GEF.
These large Yugoslavia 1000 dinara notes are dated 1931 and are printed in pastel colours in that wonderful French style (P29) The front features a portrait of Queen Marie who was the wife of King Alexander until his assassination in 1934. She fled to Britain during the Second World War and died in exile in 1961. In 2014 her remains were returned to Serbia to be reinterred. Lovely notes in AU/Unc.
