Crown

Group I, frist horseman, type Ia, king on horseback left, horse caparisoned with plume on head and crupper, mm Cross Calvary over Lis. Reverse, Square-topped shield over long cross fourchee, mm Cross Calvary. Good Very Fine with much of the fine details clear, an outstanding example.

(over Bell reverse). Third horseman, rev: oval shield without CR. S2758. Weak spot to the obverse, otherwise F/VF. A respectable example of this wonderful large Crown.

In 1662 the Mint started making silver crowns on a machine, so they were milled rather than hammered coins. The Crown or five shillings was the largest silver coin made at the time. Please remember that these coins are over 300 years old and were a hell of a lot of money at the time. You have the bust of King Charles II on the obverse four shields and his initials on the reverse. Dates will be of our choice but this first milled crown of King Charles II is available in three grades for most collectors. Offered here in Fine.

George III Sterling Silver Crown (1818-1820) offered in Very Good condition. A very important coin as it was the first of the ‘new’ coinage to be struck.

In 1816 the government made all of the older coins no longer legal tender. They then issued a whole series of new coins, which were of course legal tender. This is the first type of Crown or Five Shillings to be issued for King George III. They are struck in Sterling Silver and were issued only from 1818-1820. This coin is now proving very hard to get and it has been some time since we last had enough to offer them. Dates of our choice and this coin is available in different grades. A very important coin as it was the first of the ‘new’ coinage to be struck.
