South Sudan gained its independence in July 2011 when it was recognised as a country in its own right. We can now offer a trio of higher value notes from this troubled African nation. Included are the 100, 500 and 1000 South Sudanese Pound notes dated between 2019 and 2021 (P15-PW17). The fronts feature a portrait of Dr Johan Garanga de Mabior. He was instrumental in the foundation of South Sudan and led the Sudan People’s Liberation Army during the 2nd Sudanese Civil War. He was tragically killed in a helicopter crash in 2005, robbed of the chance to see his country finally achieve independence. The back of 100 pounds features a lion and a huge waterfall, the 500 pounds a view of the Juba Nila Bridge over the White Nile River while a pair of ostriches is featured on the 1000. Uncirculated.

I had the good fortune to visit the island nation of St Thomas and Prince and while there saw much of the exotic bird life for which it is well known. It lies off the West coast of Africa. These 5 shilling notes dating from 1966 were amongst the first to be issued by Uganda after independence in 1962 and replaced notes from the collapsed East Africa Currency Board. The arms of the new country are on the front with an impressive waterfall depicted on the back. (P1) Crisp Uncirculated examples.
Idi Amin was a notorious President of Uganda in the 1970s. His dictatorial and bloody rule eventually ended and he went into exile. Notes with his portrait have always been popular with collectors and as the years have passed, have become increasingly elusive, especially in top condition. We recently came by a small number of the complete denomination set featuring Idi Aminwith examples of the 5,10,20,50 and 100 shillings (P5-9) All our notes are Uncirculated. Acomplete set of the notes issued over 20 years ago by Zambia between 1980 and 1988. The colourful set comprises the 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 kwacha (P23-8) All our notes feature a portrait of Kenneth Kaunda. Zambia achieved independence in 1964 and Kenneth Kaunda served as its first President from 1964 until 1991. His portrait on the fronts appears alongside a view of the fish eagle, the national bird of Zambia. Illustrations on the backs include a dam, buildings, the cotton harvest and fields of maize. Zimbabwe began issuing notes again in 2019. So far just 4 denominations have been issued. Zimbabwe’s economy was in free fall at the start of the 21st century and denominations climbed through the hundreds, to the millions, billions and finally trillions. These 200 million dollars were issued in 2008 but didn’t last long because denominations quickly climbed into the trillions before revaluation took place in 2009 and the currency was finally suspended.(P81) Be a millionaire 200 times over.
