In the 1990’s Angola suffered from inflation and this was reflected in the size of the banknote denominations. This 500,000 kwanzas note is dated 1991 (P134) The front features a conjoined portrait of Eduardo dos Santos and Agostinho Neto, both prominent leaders in the fight for independence against Portugal .A family group of rhinoceros feature on the back. This charming bond for 100 mil reis for the Banco do Cafe was for issue in the early years of the 20th century according to a law passed in 1890 (PS541r) The size of a large banknote the bond has a central vignette of seated allegorical females with trumpet, sword and laurel wreath fl anking a central shield. Once issued, the bond would pay 7% per year, payable in January and July and recorded on the back until the bond was redeemed. A charming piece in Crisp Uncirculated.
Mao Tse Tung has been a feature of modern Chinese notes for some time. This 100 yuan note, the highest denomination currently issued is dated 2005 (P907a. His portrait dominates the front while the back features a view of the façade of his Mausoleum, which is to be found in Tiananmen Square. Crisp Uncirculated.
In 1990, the Bank of England unveiled a new series of banknotes. The first denomination to appear was the £5. It was distinguished by a much larger portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the front. The back featured the portrait of railway engineer George Stephenson, alongside a vignette of his most famous locomotive The Rocket (B357) Graham Gill was Chief Cashier. The first prefix for this new design was the letter A. We can offer this important note in two ways both in Uncirculated - notes with the very first prefix A01.
A trio of notes issued by the Weimar Republic in Germany. Our trio comprises the 10,20 and 50 reichsmarks dated between 1924 and 1933 (P180-2) They are fairly densely engraved with portraits on the front of Albrecht Daniel Thaer, agronomist, Werner von Siemens, industrialist and inventor and David Hansemann, banker. In the 1940s, Greece suffered from rampant inflation and although times were hard the banknotes produced were still able to celebrate Greece’s glorious past. The numbers on this note say a modest 2000 but the truth is the note is for 2000 million drachma !(P133) The central vignette is a frieze taken from The Parthenon in Athens. These notes were printed locally in Athens and are in Uncirculated condition.
