FAO United Nations - 25th World Food Day 2005_obv

FAO United Nations - 25th World Food Day 2005

Issued in 2005 for the 25th World Food Day on the 16th of October, this handsome very high relief art medal was issued by the United Nations in Rome. It was issued by the FAO or Food For All Organization. It has some wheat growing out of an open book and the other side has a globe with a cartouche. One of the highest relief medallions that I have seen and making it must have been quite difficult. They are Uncirculated and struck in bronze with a light golden finish.

Five Different Plated Commemorative Crowns

We have just bought a huge collection of gold and silver plated, mostly crown-sized, coins but because they are all different we can’t really list them all but what we are doing is offering them in groups of 5. They are from all over the world and are struck in proof-like BU and each come in a capsule. They are mostly royalty related, commemorating events from the reign of Elizabeth II and other Windsor family members. They are also priced to sell.

France Louis XVI 2 Sol, Fair_obv

France Louis XVI 2 Sol, Fair

Although the French Revolution began in 1789, Louis XVI remained on the throne as a constitutional monarch until September 1792, and not as the absolute ruler he had been before. The old “livre tournois” remained the currency until it was replaced by the franc in 1795, so these 2 sol coins were the last of his reign. Struck only between 1791 and 1793, they show the image of the king with his new title of “King of the French”. The obverse shows a Liberty Cap on a fasces against a background of an oak wreath. These coins are very well worn and are only being offered in Fair condition, but they are definitely of great historical interest. FFR9953 Lous XV.

Gallienus Pegasus Antoninianus_obv

Gallienus Pegasus Antoninianus

Gallienus ruled as sole emperor from A.D. 260-268 during one of the most difficult times in the history of the empire. Not only was the empire facing natural disasters and invasions on all sides but he had to face at least 8 rebellions from his own governors and generals! He issued a fantastic group of bronze Antoniniani coins to honour the Gods, asking for their protection against these troubles. We sold out of these coins last time but we managed to buy a small group of the winged horse, Pegasus, rearing on its hind legs. These are designed to honour Sol, the personification of the sun. These are linked to the protection of the games that were run in all the Gods honour. The coins are Very Fine but because of the chaos at the time remember they may be a little weakly struck.

Gallienus Silvered Ant_obv

Gallienus Silvered Ant

Born in 218 AD, Publius Licinius Egnatius Gallienus grappled with the challenges of the Crisis of the Third Century during his reign as Roman Emperor. He faced invasions by barbarian tribes, numerous usurpers, and the loss of various provinces from the Empire. Responding to the crisis, Gallienus adopted a strategy of co-emperorship, appointing several co-rulers to help manage diff erent regions of the vast empire. However, this move, aimed at restoring stability, challenged his authority and contributed to the tragic death of his sons. Despite his efforts, Gallienus’s reign was marked by ongoing turmoil, and his life came to an abrupt end in 268 A.D. when he was assassinated during a coup. Nonetheless, historians acknowledge Gallienus for extending the empire’s existence by another 208 years. The Antoninianus coins we are offering, featuring exquisite silvering and either a standing or sitting figure on reverse, providing a glimpse into the earlier years of his reign when the silver content was more significant as towards the end of his reign they had reduced to around 6% silver, making these examples particularly scarce, they come in Very Fine grade.

Henry III Long Cross Cut Halfpenny, FINE_main

Henry III Long Cross Cut Halfpenny, FINE

In the middle of Henry III’s reign, in 1247, a new penny called the “Long Cross” Penny was struck. They were struck at 20 mints across the country, most being struck at London. The obverse has a portrait of the King, the reverse depicts a “Long Cross” extending to the edge of the coin, this allowed the mint (and possibly traders) to cut pennies into halves and quarters and used as change.
