New Stock February 2020

Coincraft Newsletter No. 23

Hello and welcome to the latest Coincraft Newsletter

Dear Collector,

We are delighted to inform you that the News page is back up again on our website. You can now read what's been said about us in the press and get to know us a little bit better.

Another Collectors' favourite, The Round the World in Banknotes catalogue, is now also live on our website. Banknote collectors will be happy to know that Natalia has found some very interesting new banknotes, some of them from countries that weren't featured on the first catalogue.

And last but not least, we have a new stock update which includes, amongst many other items, a 1999 £5 Silver Proof Millennium, a 1944 Sixpence in Choice UNC, a 1994 Silver Proof 'Scottish' Pound in capsule, and a 1995 Charlie Chaplin Crown from Gibraltar.

As always the availability on some of these items is limited.

Elizabeth II, £5 Silver Proof Millennium, 1999
£59.50 (CLD7150)

Diameter: 38.61 mm approx

Do you remember the prophets of doom that emerged before the year 2000? What about the havoc that the Y2K bug was going to cause? It's hard to believe that 20 years have passed since then... but just before the turn of the century, and as a forerunner to the Millennium, the Royal Mint issued this Silver Proof £5 in 1999. You have three dates on it, two on one side and one on the other. On the obverse, you have a portrait of the Queen and the date 1999, the date it was actually issued. On the other side, you have a map of the world with Great Britain prominent with the Greenwich Meridian at the top. On the one side, you have 1999 and on the other side, you have 2000.

Each piece is struck in Proof Sterling silver and each coin comes in the Royal Mint capsule as issued. It is one of the more interesting of the Royal Mint’s Five Pound series.

George VI, Sixpence Choice Uncirculated, 1944
£20.00 (U6D44U)

Diameter: 38.61 mm approx.

World War II 1944 Silver Sixpence in Choice Uncirculated condition. They are fantastic coins to see and own. Supplies are very limited.

Elizabeth II, Silver Proof 'Scottish' Pound in capsule FDC, 1994
£39.50 (UPD94S)

Diameter: 22 mm approx

This handsome Sterling Silver proof version of the Pound coin was issued in 1994 when the design was to honour Scotland. You have a rampant Lion on one side with the so-called Maklouf bust of the Queen on the other side.
These are Special Collector’s Editions struck in Proof Sterling Silver by the Royal Mint. They had an original mintage limit of 25,000, but I don’t know how many they actually struck.

Each Sterling Silver Proof comes in a protective capsule inside the original Royal Mint case of issue. The design is most attractive and it would be very difficult today to even get a normal circulation issue in Uncirculated let alone Silver Proof.

Now some 26 years old and not an easy coin to find, a great gift if you know someone born or married in 1994 and with the new Pound Coin just released, interest and demand for these older issues is greater.

Gibraltar, Charlie Chaplin Crown, 1995
£18.95 (FGI4610)

Diameter: 38.60mm approx

Charlie Chaplin made his name in the early days of the cinema. His most famous character was The Tramp with a signature bowler hat, scruffy suit, and cane.

He is commemorated on this full-sized Crown issued by Gibraltar in 1995 as part of a series to mark the Centenary of the Cinema 1885-1995. On the obverse, we find a mature portrait of Queen Elizabeth II The reverse has Chaplin in the familiar garb of The Tramp with his name and dates 1889-1977.

Struck in prooflike Cupro-nickel this Charlie Chaplin crown is great value for money.

Elizabeth II, 1987 Deluxe  Proof Set
£39.50 (UPS87D)

For some reason, the 1987 Proof Set has always been known as the Forgotten Proof Set.
I can’t understand why. There are two coins, the 10p, and the 50p which are only available in the Royal Mint sets. So if you need these two coins they have to come from a set.
The 1987 Proof Set contains the £1, 50p, 20p, 10p, 5p, 2p and 1p in the Royal Mint display case of issue. We can offer this 1987 set in the Red leather presentation case.

Switzerland, Shooting Festival Medal
£9.95 (OSW8820)

For Centuries the Swiss have had shooting festivals, do you remember William Tell, his son and the apple? There were many shooting festivals all over Switzerland and it was with great pride when someone won one of the contests.

The cost of producing these medallions is quite high as is the prestige of winning one of them.

If you won a shooting festival you were presented with a medal on a ribbon. That medal is what we are offering here. There are a number of different designs and years, the ones on offer are from about 1949-1970. The medal supplied may be different from those illustrated.

They are very attractive and at our price, they are less than the cost of making them…
