Coin Collecting Tips: William & Mary (1688 – 1694) Halfcrowns

Only the most avid collector of varieties will attempt to assemble a set of the minor variations of the crown on the reverse of the 1689 Halfcrown, but this coin should always be checked for the very striking L over M type and for the 'FRA' reverse, both scarce.

Similarly, the 1690, in itself a particularly scarce date, must always be examined for the major 'GRETIA' variety.

The later type of 1691-93 is struck in very low relief and a very fine or extremely fine specimen may appear as fine or very fine to the untrained eye. In addition, these pieces are frequently found with haymarking.

Interesting contemporary forgeries exist which command unusually high prices. Some exhibit non-existent die/date edge combinations.
